The Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL celebrated New Year’s Day with a 3-2 win over the Ontario Reign, keeping the trophy from the inaugural Indoor Winter Classic in Las Vegas.
The Wranglers took the first lead of the game on a goal from forward Andrew Sarauer 11 minutes into the first. Wranglers goaltender Joe Fallon held Ontario scoreless through the remainder of the period as the Reign outshot Las Vegas 9-5.
Midway through the second, Reign left wing Kyle Clifford evened the score 1-1, and in the final 28 seconds of the period, defenseman Brock Sheahan gave the team the 2-1 lead. Las Vegas rebounded with a power play goal from center Eric Lampe eight minutes into the third to knot it up once again, and with 3:54 left in the game, Wranglers left wing Josh Lunden put Las Vegas back on top. The 3-2 lead held, with Reign goaltender Jean-Francois Berube pulled for the man advantage, and the Wranglers skated with the win for a 1-0-0 record in 2013 and the Indoor Winter Classic championship.
The two teams rematch tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Orleans Arena, and the Wranglers host the Utah Grizzlies on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday, Jan 6., at 2:05 p.m. Dora the Explorer will make a special appearance at both games, and fans can skate with the Wranglers after Sunday’s game with rental skates provided at no additional charge.
